Optical splitters can be divided into fused taper type and planar waveguide type according to the principle. There are two types. The fused taper type is formed by side-welding two or more optical fibers; the planar waveguide type is a micro-optical element type product, which uses photolithography technology to form an optical waveguide on a medium or semiconductor substrate to achieve branch distribution function. The splitting principles of these two types are similar. They achieve different branching amounts by changing the mutual coupling (coupling degree, coupling length) of the evanescent field between optical fibers and changing the radius of the optical fiber. Conversely, multiple optical signals can be combined into one signal called a synthesizer. The fused taper type fiber coupler has become the mainstream manufacturing technology in the market due to its simple manufacturing method, low price, easy connection with external optical fiber as a whole, and can withstand mechanical vibration and temperature changes.
